If you had to choose one optional tool to bring on every service call, what is it, and what problem does it solve the fastest.

I’m especially interested in the job where it saved you time or saved you from a bad guess. Like a weird intermittent issue, a hard to trace circuit, an attic crawl situation, a panel that was not labeled, or anything that turned into a lesson.

Share what kind of work you mostly do and why that tool fits your style. Residential, commercial, industrial, new work, troubleshooting, all of it.

Circuit tracer all day. For service work, it turns guesswork into facts fast, especially in old houses with mystery splices. The time saver story is finding the real feed to a hallway circuit without opening half the attic.

I’d pick a clamp meter. When something is “random,” seeing the actual amp draw keeps me from blaming the wrong thing. It helped me notice a load pulling way higher than expected and the problem wasn’t the switch at all. Light commercial and residential.

For me it’s a receptacle/outlet tester. It’s a fast reality check before I start guessing about “bad wiring” and it caught a swapped hot/neutral once when the panel label was totally wrong. Mostly residential troubleshooting.
