Why can't I put a 20 amp outlet on a 15 amp line?

I'm new to this, and this is a head scratcher for me. I've been watching some YouTube videos, and 20 amp outlets just seem way more heavy duty and robust than the 15 amp ones.

I'd love to use them everywhere for safety, but I know the electrical code won't let me put them on a 15 amp line.
Why not? I'm guessing it's so someone doesn't see the outlet and assume the wiring is for 20 amps, which could be a fire risk.
And if I actually wanted to have a 20 amp outlet, what's the right way to do it? What kind of wire and breaker would I need to use?

Am I on the right track here, or is there another reason?
 
The "right" way is to have the circuit protected by a 20-AMP breaker with a minimum of 12-gauge copper wire conductors.

That said, do you really have a 15-AMP circuit for receptacles?

Also, in my opinion, using a 20-AMP-rated receptacle on a 15-AMP circuit seems like a waste of money.

If one were to put a load over the limit of a 15 ampere circuit on the 20 amp receptacle outlet, the building won't burn down or anything tragic- If The Circuit Breaker Or Fuse Opens In Time!! Suppose it doesn't?

You mentioned that you want heavy duty receptacle outlets, thus your quest for 20 amp devices.
Purchase agency listed (UL, ETL, etc) Specification Grade or Hospital Grade in 15 amp for your 15 amp circuits.

Those from a reputable manufacturer are quite robust. They will be as good as the 20 amp ones. Same standards apply to 15 and 20. Same agency testing requirements.

Skip Push-Wire devices where one pushes a wire into a spring loaded hole in the back of the receptacle. I have replaced many which burned & probably ould have replaced more if my career involved residential work.

Clamp Back wiring is quick, easy and secure. Specification & Hospital Grade can be found with that feature.
