Whats the service call habit you learned the hard way?

I want to build a thread that newer electricians can actually use on their next service call. What’s the one step you always do, even when you’re tired and the job looks easy, because skipping it has burned you before.

What did that “lesson” look like, intermittent faults, mislabeled panels, shared neutrals, backfeeds, bad terminations, bad devices, or something else. And how do you do your step in a way that’s fast but still safe and consistent.

Drop your rule and the story behind it. If two people disagree, that’s fine too, it’s useful to see the different approaches and why they work.

My rule is test it live, then test it dead, then test it live again. I got burned once by a mislabeled panel and a circuit that was still hot from another feed. Now I always prove my tester on a known live source before and after. It adds one minute and saves your fingers.

I always verify the breaker actually kills the circuit I am working on. Customer says breaker 14 is the kitchen, but half the time it is not. I plug in a lamp, flip breakers until it dies, then label it right there.
