i looked at some old posts about running conduit out the top of a 3R enclosure and im still mixed up. i get its a bad move because water can sneak in. you are supposed to go out the sides or bottom or use a gutter under the panel stretch it out past the panel and then run conduit from there. but can you run conduit out the top in a damp spot?? other say use myers hubs with emt and raintight fittings. does that work?? myers hubs say they are good for indoor or outdoor use with rigid conduit and IMC.
 
Yes, you should be very cautious about running conduit out the top of a 3R enclosure. it's not recommended since water can sneak in through the top, especially in damp or wet locations. It's best if you run conduit out the sides or bottom to prevent water intrusion.

Going in from the top isn't the best option, but if you really need to, Myers hubs with either rigid or IMC will work,they're rated for that. EMT can be trickier, though, because it doesn't seal quite the same way. I've managed it before using a drip loop and tight hubs when necessary, but going from the side or bottom is definitley the safer bet
 
You can go out the top, but you gotta do it right, but yeah, side or bottom is always safer, water loves gravity, and one bad fitting up top can wreck your gear. Go top only and I repeat only if you have no other choice, and do it clean
 
If you are covered by NFPA 70, SoalrEco, check Article 312.2. It allows fittings listed for wet locations. Next check the specific fitting and ensure it is so listed.

If you look at a typical socket type meter can, you'll see a small rim around the opening in the top. A bolt-on "B-fitting" is used to accept the conduit. The purpose of the rim is to re-direct condensed water that.sneaks in the threads away from the inside of the enclosure. Using a Meyers hub on a plain knockout won't give the same protection. (You can try anti-ox paste to seal the threads, but that is iffy)

As others mentioned, if you have to go in the top, take the conductors below the level of the connections and make a drip loop. Ensure that there is drainage in the bottom of the enclosure. (But not so big as to allow insects.) I'd not do it, but that is an option.

An "LL" or "LR" fitting may help you out. ('LB" if access to the door is available) Leave the side of the can with a chase nipple into the LL or LR, go up and then offset back toward the center of the box if desired. That is how we always built in wash-down areas.

Yeah, you technically can run out the top in a damp location if you use proper raintight Myers hubs and fittings. Still, side or bottom is the safer bet if you've got the space.

You technically can do top entry with a Myers hub and rigid or IMC, but it's gotta be sealed right or moisture will sneak in over time. I've done it with a drip loop and a hub, but honestly, side or bottom saves way more headaches. Water is sneaky like that.
 
Great tips on using wet location fittings and ensuring NFPA compliance. The drip loop method with LL/LR fittings for offset routing is a clever way to prevent condensation problems from top entries.
