GFCI and AFCI keep tripping even when everything seems fine

I’m trying to learn the basics of GFCI and AFCI, but I’m honestly confused because sometimes they trip when it feels like nothing is wrong. I understand they are there for safety and I actually appreciate that. It is just hard to tell when it is a real problem versus a nuisance trip that happens because the device is extra sensitive.

A specific moment that made me ask was this week. An outlet tripped during normal use and nothing smelled hot and nothing looked burned. I reset it and it worked fine again, which felt satisfying because at least it came back. Then it tripped again later and now I’m in that loop of not trusting it. I do not want to ignore a real fault, but I also do not want to start swapping parts randomly.

When you see a GFCI or AFCI trip like this, what do you check first before replacing anything? Do you look for loose connections, moisture, shared neutrals, certain appliances that cause false trips, or something else?

I’d start with the boring stuff. Tight connections, backstabbed outlets, and any signs of moisture. GFCI nuisance trips can be a damp box or a failing appliance. AFCI can be picky with certain loads too. How old is the device and does it trip at random or only when you use something specific.

First move is always isolate the load. Unplug everything on that circuit and see if it holds. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, that points more toward wiring, device, or a neutral/ground issue. If it only trips with a specific thing plugged in, that “thing” is now your suspect, space heaters, treadmills, older fridges, anything with a motor or heating element can be messy on AFCI and sometimes even GFCI.
