Hi.
How you guys identifying final ring legs when singe core cables are used? How to do it professionally on assessment to make sure step 2 and 3 are done properly on continuity test?
 
During installation, I always label each core clearly at both ends (e.g. L1, L2, N1, N2, E1, E2) with numbered tape or heat shrink as I pull them in. For the assessment and continuity test, it's a systematic process. I'll use a reliable low-voltage bell tester or continuity tester with good long leads. You'll need to ring out each individual core, one at a time, from one end of the circuit to the other to confirm its identity. Connect to your first identified core at the consumer unit, then go to each outlet in turn until you find continuity, marking it definitively as you go. Repeat this for every single leg of the ring (L, N, and E) until you're absolutely sure which core is which. It's tedious, but thorough labeling and methodical testing are what assessors want to see.
 
When working with singles, best way to professionally ID the final legs in a ring is to test end to end continuity before linking anything. Step 2 (continuity of ring conductors) and Step 3 (cpc test) need proper identification upfront, so use a low resistance continuity tester and bell out each conductor to confirm which two cores form each leg. Clearly label them once identified, then proceed with Step 2 by linking line to line, neutral to neutral, and CPC to CPC at one end and measuring cross resistance at the other.
