Year-end load changes exposing circuit limits

I had a breaker start tripping more often during evenings this month, and at first it felt random. After a few repeats, it became obvious nothing new was added. It’s just December loads stacking up differently than the rest of the year.

More indoor time, longer lighting use, heaters overlapping with normal loads. The circuit isn’t overloaded on paper, but winter definitely changed how close it runs to its limit. Feels like classic end-of-year bad luck where the system hasn’t changed, but usage has.

Curious if seasonal load shifts catch others off guard this time of year.

Definitely noticed this at home and on service calls. Once everyone’s inside more, cooking, heating, and lighting overlap in ways summer never shows.

This is exactly when homeowners swear nothing changed, but usage patterns absolutely did. More time inside, more heat, more lights, all stacked at the same hours. Winter has a way of stress-testing “borderline” circuits.

Seasonal load shifts are normal, but frequent trips can also point to a loose connection that gets worse under sustained load. If you notice warm outlets, flicker, buzzing, or any burning smell, stop and get a licensed electrician to check it. Cold weather is not the time to gamble with that.
