What’s the wildest thing you’ve heard someone call an electrical thing?

I need a laugh and I feel like the Electricians Forum is perfect for this. What is the funniest thing you have heard a homeowner call an electrical part, because I swear people make up brand new vocabulary when they are stressed. I’m not even making fun of it, I genuinely love the creativity. Sometimes the description is so wrong but also kind of accurate in a weird way.

A specific one that stuck with me was a friend pointing at a GFCI and calling it the bathroom reset plug thing. I knew exactly what they meant, but I also laughed because it sounded like a video game item. It was satisfying when we found the actual issue and everything worked again, but I still think about that phrase. What are your best ones, and did you ever have a moment where the homeowner name was confusing at first but then you immediately got it?

I had someone call a 3-way switch “the upstairs downstairs light controller” and honestly it was wrong but also perfectly right. Another one was “the angry outlet” for a loose receptacle that kept sparking. I’m hoping 2026 has more of these and fewer actual surprises in the walls.

"The wake me up at night thing".

Me: Huh?

Owner: The thing where I have to go to the basement and unscrew a little, flat light bulb looking gizmo with a window that turned black and put a new one in during the night when we wake up cold.

Translation: The fuse for the oil burner blew again. Good thing the owner left him a few boxes of spare fuses!

My top one is calling the GFCI the shock stopper. Second place is calling a three way switch the upstairs downstairs light switch. Confusing for 5 seconds, then it clicks and you are like yep that is it.

I kind of like Shock Stopper!

I think I'll copy write the name and have them made offshore someplace, the flood late night TV with ads:

"Buy the Genuine Shock Stopper Receptacle now for only 4 payments of $19.99 plus a small handling charge. But if you act quickly, we will remove one payment! That's just 3 payments of $19.99 for our Genuine Shock Stopper! And, for an additional $12.99 we will send a UL listed one! (Plus extra postage & handling). Brought to you by Light Brain"
