What’s the most important code lesson for homeowners to learn early?

I’m not an electrician, but I’ve been trying to learn the basics and I’m surprised how much calmer it makes me feel about my house. Like, once you understand a few core rules, you stop guessing and you start spotting things that should probably get checked.

This weekend I opened up an outlet box in an older room just to see what was going on, and I immediately realized I’m not qualified to “wing it.” Nothing exploded, but it was enough for me to slow down and respect the process. Honestly, that was satisfying in its own way because it made me take safety seriously instead of rushing.

If you could teach homeowners one code rule that would prevent a ton of real world issues, what would it be? Something about grounding, box fill, GFCI and AFCI, proper splices, labeling, or something else you see all the time?
 
For me it’s understanding where GFCI and AFCI protection matters and why. A lot of real world issues start in kitchens, baths, garages, and older bedrooms where protection is missing or bypassed. Curious what pros here see most often, missing protection or nuisance trips from bad devices.
 
For homeowners, I’d say the biggest early lesson is treat every connection like it needs to be mechanically solid, not just touching. Most scary issues I’ve seen come from loose terminations, backstabs, and sloppy splices that heat up over time. If you open a box and it looks crowded or messy, that’s usually a sign to stop and get help.
 
Amen to what Ortega wrote about back stabs! (The receptacle outlets & switches with spring loaded holes in the back to shove a wire into).
I also see, and caution against, two wires under one screw on receptacles. Sooner or later, one will come off, leaving the other one loose to heat or arc.

For the non-DIY people: Be careful about how you route extension cords.
I had a call from a friend recently who could not get a circuit breaker to reset. Cause: There was an SPT extension cord tucked behind a radiator, laying against a steam pipe. The insulation dried from heat, cracked and the line side grounded itself to the pipe (and was stuck to it). Under rugs and furniture feet show up often, too.
 
I agree with above comments about tight connections. Also be really sure all stripped wire gets covered, like wire nuts long enough to cover bare wires or trim the wires shorter. Also, if you have to work too hard to force connections & wire nuts into a box you risk compromising insulation & forcing wire nuts off. Two more things.
1. Adopt the habit to always work with breakers turned off.
2. The most important thing to get right in electrical work and plumbing-how the waste gets out. With plumbing, it's the septic system that protects you from germs that can make you sick or kill you. With electricity, getting the neutral right all the time might save your life.

Start small & research a lot before trying something new. Take pics of everything you work on before starting & along the way so you'll know how to put it back. If you have an electrician friend or can make one, volunteer to help so you can watch & learn.
