Posted about a low use generator and need input

Hi there! Trying to help family decide if a Ford V10 NG standby unit with 600 hrs is worth installing and posted in the backup power section.

that's a curious situation, standby power but still almost 25days of usage when needed. eitherway welcome to the Electricians community!

Interesting find. Was it originally used for standby or continuous duty? That makes a big difference in value. I’d also ask if it’s been load tested recently like hours don’t tell the full story on these.

Is this an entirely different machine and question? (I could not see your previous post linked above today. The title was there, but the body was blank)

Whatever the situation, the machine should be load tested before committing to buy, as Data_Riku wrote above. Also, if you buy it, be certain to have it load banked. Those hours might have been low output or idle hours- both of which are detrimental to the alternator and I think to the engine as well. Load banking is very good to rectify the detrimental effects of low output or long idle use.

I can see your post linked in #4 today. The wording indicates that the other post is a about different generator.
Did you give up on that one? Did you buy that one?

It's customary and respected if you posted an update on that generator at that thread. People who helped you there would appreciate the update.

Standby units with low hours can be great, but installation costs and usage patterns usually decide if it’s worth it. Interested to hear what others told you in backup power.
