Are there any issues with upgrading to a smart meter when adding a 3-phase EV load?

I'm upgrading my garage in Arizona to include 3-phase service for a lift and a Level 2 EV charger. My utility company plans to install an EDMI smart meter as part of the process. Before I schedule the installation, I want to know if the new smart meter works well with load management systems that alternate between home and EV charging during off-peak hours.
 
You’ll be fine. Smart meters like the EDMI don’t interfere with load management setups like they just monitor and report usage. Your EV charger and panel controller handle the actual load switching. Just make sure your electrician ties the control relays to the right phase legs so nothing fights the meter.
 
Your local utility might offer a discounted rate for EV charging with the EDMI meter. It will charge the vehicles either during off-peak hours or when their grid is not taxed heavily. We have both choices here. You can always call and ask.

(It's hard to know if your new meter is compatible since EDMI is a brand name, not a type. They make all kinds of meters with varying capabilities. But, if the utility does offer discounted EV charging, they will install the appropriate meter.)

I understand the meter doesn't affect load management and the main variable is how the utility handles billing. For anyone who has done this before, did you have to request a separate EV rate plan or did the utility automatically offer it after the new meter was installed?

In any I've installed (3-Phase and Single Phase services), the meter does, indeed, manage the load for charging during non-peak or during low demand hours. The utility sends wireless signals to the meter, telling it what to do at that moment of time. For allowing them to control when the EV charges, the customer gets a lower rate per kW.

It is a separate meter from your general use meter & usually is installed beside the general use meter or at the EWV charging station. (They also offer separate meters & rates for water heaters, air conditioners, electric heat, etc.)


Time of Day Rate-
For Time-Of-Day billing, the meter keeps track of how many kW were used during non-peak hours and how many during peak hours. Our utility has three rates for 3 different times of the day. It is up to the customer to decide when to use what electrical device.

If you want to charge by Time of Day Rate Plan at low rate times with no intervention; I suppose one could find out when the kW rate is lowest and set up a timer on your circuit to only let it be energized during those hours. It will get a bit expensive to set up a 50 amp timer or a timer and contractor versus letting the utility do their thing for free.

Not long ago I was at a house for a friend freebie job. There was the main lighting & convenience meter, a meter for the electric water heater, a meter for uninterruptible central air conditioning and a meter for EV charging. It was quite a crowded corner of the house- but saved the owner quite a bit on electricity costs.

In that instance, the EV meter and the water heater meter control when the load is energized. The central air is controlled by a relay connected to the meter (and to the unit), the main lighting/convenience meter's cost saving came from the meter remembering what time of day each kW was used (peak or non-peak hours).

Yup- Confusion is easy!
