Any pro tips for rewiring old houses cleanly?

I’ve been seriously thinking about freelancing and picking up small residential wiring jobs on the side, but I’m trying to learn more before diving in. A lot of the houses around here in North Carolina are older like plaster walls, limited attic space, and a lot of surprises behind every box. For those of you who’ve done rewires in older homes, what’s your go-to approach for updating wiring without tearing up all the drywall? Are there tools or tricks that make fishing new runs easier? I’ve watched a few pros do it cleanly, but it still looks like part skill, part magic.

Man, rewiring old places is half electrical, half archaeology. Every house has a different surprise behind the wall. I usually pull one circuit at a time and use the old wiring to pull in new fish lines when I can. A good inspection camera helps you figure out what’s going on before you start tearing anything apart.

hi @Greygnarl_Dragon invest in a good fiberglass fish tape kit (with multiple flexibilities) and, more importantly, a magnetic wire pulling system (like the Magnepull).
That thing is a game changer for getting wires across inaccessible spaces like fire blocks and plaster ceilings

I’ve been watching a few pros do it and the trick seems to be planning. They mark every stud bay, find attic or crawlspace runs, then pull one circuit at a time. I tried it on my own place, and mapping the route first saved me from guessing blind.
