UK electrician moved to California

Good afternoon all,

My names Scott and I’m a electrician from the UK that has recently moved to Orange County CA.

I’m looking for any information really on job opportunities, job market etc as I’ve minimal experience working in the US.

I’ve experience in almost every sector but my background is mainly industrial (oil/gas, power stations, data center, pharmaceutical, mining)

I’ve been in contact with the DIR and they’ve confirmed with my experience and electrical apprenticeship in the UK that I can apply for my Californian electrical license. I’m currently also working my way through the code to get up to speed

Well you already know the basics, so that's a good start, but there are some differences, so you'll need to learn a few new things. I'd start getting familiar with CEC and ask if there are certain steps for getting certified by DIR. Not sure what else you'll need but DIR should give you a clear outline and I don't think you'll have any issues.

Cali's electrical scene is brutal, licenses, unions, insurance hoops, and everyone wants local experience. Industrial background helps, but don't expect smooth entry, lots of UK sparkies end up underpaid or stuck as journeymen first
