My generator works but the whole setup still feels confusing

The more I look at my backup power setup, the more I feel like it should be simpler than it is. I have a good generator, I have a transfer switch, and everything technically works, but there are still moments when I question if I am doing things the right way. I am in Oregon and we get enough random outages that I want something steady and easy, not a system that feels like homework every time I test it. Half the time I am checking manuals to make sure I did not miss a step. Maybe I am overthinking it, but I figured I would ask. Does anyone else feel like these setups are way more complicated than they should be? What did you do to make yours easier to manage?

backup setups always feel more complicated than the equipment itself. I simplified mine by walking through the whole process once and writing down exactly what I actually needed to do, not what the manual explained in ten paragraphs. After that, it felt way smoother.

My home setup is intuitive to me. For my wife, I did similar to what Ortega_Aliahan wrote and made a simplified instructions tag. Did the same for the boiler and the air conditioner so she can troubleshoot simple failures when I am out aimlessly wandering the streets.

Backup power can feel like a lot at first, especially when you only use it during outages. It gets easier once you tighten down the process you use every time. Some people color-code breakers or add small labels to make the steps obvious. How often do you test your system? Sometimes running it on a schedule takes a lot of the mystery out of it.

Yeah I get what you mean. Even as a new electrician some of these setups feel like they were designed by three different people who never talked to each other. The best thing I did for mine was label everything clearly so I don’t have to think during an outage. Flip this, flip that, done. Makes it way less stressful when the lights go out.
