I thought I was finally getting the hang of residential wiring until I opened a junction box today. The house is in West Virginia and looks like it has been worked on by a lot of people over the years. Inside the box I found a mix of wire colors and a neutral that seemed to be shared in a way that did not match anything I have been taught so far. Everything still worked, but the layout looked like someone took shortcuts. Now I am wondering if this is just normal when learning wiring or if I stumbled on something that needs to be corrected. For anyone who remembers their early wiring days, what confusing setup did you run into that made you double check your entire understanding?

yeah, discovering confusing and non standard wiring in old houses is very common, and it means that you should be cautious.
Common issues are like different wire colors for the same function over time, the use of aluminum wiring in older homes, or shared neutrals in a way that is unsafe and against current codes.
This setup needs to be corrected by a qualified electrician to prevent fire hazards, even if it still seems to be working well

Finding wiring that does not match the book is pretty normal once you start opening older junction boxes. Shared neutrals show up a lot in homes that were updated piece by piece rather than rewired all at once. It could help to map out which cables belong to which circuit so you know whether the neutral arrangement is safe or needs attention. Are you planning to tidy up that box or just trying to understand how it ended up that way?

PS: Carrot mentioned aluminum wiring. Two things to watch closely for on service calls with aluminum is if the devices are proper for aluminum (or if proper transitions have been made).
